Due to the inherent complexity of the system, we gathered a
multidisciplinary team from different areas of expertise.

UNINOVA (Instituto de Desenvolvimento de Novas Tecnologias) is a non-profit university-industry research and interface institution, formed in 1986 by the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (FCT-UNL), the Portuguese Industrial Association (AIP), the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), the IPE, and about 30 companies.

 

UNINOVA ́s mission is to pursue fundamental and applied research, technological development, advanced training, dissemination of knowledge for the productive sector, internationalization of Portuguese engineering and technology, and promotion of entrepreneurship.

In line with this mission, the Institute ́s activities focus on:

  • in the development of research, innovation and technological development activities, including research aimed at solving problems affecting society;
  • in providing services to the community, whether public or private, internally and internationally, capable of making a significant contribution to economic, social and environmental development;
  • the offer of advanced training at the postgraduate level (MSc and PhD in collaboration with FCT-UNL and ISEL) as well as specialization courses oriented to industry, singularly or in national or international partnerships, always based on excellence research.

The Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) is one of the faculties of the Universidade de Lisboa. The core mission of ISA is Higher Education, R&D, and Technology Transfer in the scientific fields of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Engineering, Food Science and Engineering, Animal Production Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biology, and Landscape Architecture. Within Higher Education, ISA is attended by 1500 undergraduate, master and PhD students.

 

The 130 professors and 125 Researchers are PhD graduates with recognized scientific work published in international journals, books, and conferences. Presently, is involved in 94 R&D projects, 44 internationals, which ISA is the leading partner in 4 international project and 20 national projects, financed by EC and national funds and also in several projects concerning Technology Transfer. 


Our partners include universities, research institutes, and private enterprises.

ISA hosts three nationally recognized scientific research centers: Forest Research Centre focused on integrated research of forestry and related ecosystems, forestry products and forest related service.

 

The Center for Linking landscape, environment, agriculture and food, focuses on the entire Agro-Food chain, combining in a balanced way basic and applied sciences, from the cell and microorganisms to the landscape,for the knowledge and promotion of effective solutions aiming at the conservation of natural resources and the Production and food quality.

 

Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA/ULisboa)

DGT is the Portuguese entity with responsibilities on Land Cover Land Use (LCLU) mapping and it is the European Environment Agency National Reference Center (NRC) for Land Cover and the NRC for Land Use and Spatial Information. DGT develops research in different areas associated to LCLU dynamics and to LCLU mapping with aerial photographs and satellite images.
 
Other areas of research are devoted to the use of spatial information and technologies in different domains (environment, urban planning, risk assessment, social sciences).
 
DGT is a Portuguese public agency under the direct administration of the State within the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action. DGT’s mission is to pursue public policies on spatial planning, land use, territorial and urban development. 

Being also the national authority for geographic Information, DGT is in charge of the National Geodetic Network, the production of topographic and thematic cartography and Cadastre, and the coordination of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and INSPIRE implementation in Portugal (INSPIRE NCP). 

 

It operates by means of the application and updating of the respective legal and regulatory frameworks, the dissemination of best practices, guidance and technical criteria.

The Nova Information Management School (NOVA IMS) is one of the 9 Schools of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

 

It was created in 1989 and has been consolidating its position as a leading school in the area of Information Management.

 

Recently, five of NOVA IMS ́ Master Programs were ranked in the world TOP of the Best Masters Ranking 2017, by Eduniversal – international agency that publishes the annual ranking of the best MBA and Master ́s degrees in the world. It was the first time that a Portuguese School was able to see one of its Master programs classified as the best in the world in its category: the Master in Information Management with specialization in Knowledge Management and Business Intelligence.

NOVA IMS is a member of the prestigious association of schools in the field of Information Science (iSchools), an international organization that brings together the best universities in this field.

 

Also worth noticing the ABET accreditation for the area of Information Systems, specifically relating with the Information Systems Bachelor degree. NOVA IMS was the first European Institution to have an accredited program by this internationally recognized accreditation agency, in the Information Systems field.

 

NOVA IMS has managed to achieve significant levels of internationalization, with 25% foreign students coming from more than 70 different nationalities, and the participation of internationally renowned teachers in its teaching staff.

During the last five years, CESAM published more than 2000 papers in JCR journals. 

 

CESAM researchers publish in world top journals, with an impact above world averages in the respective scientific areas. During 2016, 79 countries collaborated in CESAM WoS papers. Additionally, the research quality of CESAM is a major factor to the position of University of Aveiro in the 291st position in the Environment/Ecology ISI Web of Knowledge ranking in the international ISI panorama, on January 2017.

 

The Centre of Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) is an Associated Laboratory of the University of Aveiro (UA) evaluated as Excellent Research Unit, by FCT, in 2014. CESAM includes about 490 members, 265 of which holding a PhD degree in environmental and marine sciences and being 189 PhD students.

CESAM is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit, one of the largest in the University of Aveiro, including researchers from 5 Departments of the University of Aveiro (Environment & Planning, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Geosciences) and also members from the University of Lisbon.

 

Its mission is to develop leading international research on the environment, with a special emphasis on coastal and marine areas, with the aim of strongly contribute to the formulation and implementation of national and European strategies for sustainable development.

Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) is a private, not-for-profit, association of six Portuguese universities, one polytechnic, one public telecom operator and one telecom equipment manufacturer, established in 1992 with a mission to create and share scientific knowledge in telecommunications at world level and to host and tutor graduate and post-graduate students. IT earned the statute of Associated Laboratory in 2001.

IT is organised around three main sites: Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon with delegations in Covilhã, Leiria, Lisbon and Porto. IT hosts more than 300 (PhD holding) researchers, 6 of which are Fellows of IEEE, 250 PhD Students and 200 MSc students.

IT expertise spans all areas of telecommunications and supporting sciences including wireless and optical communications, networks and multimedia.

IT yearly scientific output includes 15 books, 60 book chapters, 300 journal and 450 conference papers and 10 patents. IT has an accumulated total 2200+ journal papers gathering 23 000+ ISI citations.

 

IT is currently involved in 100 national and 30 international R&D projects. About 20 % of IT patents are being exploited. IT developed technology has already been used to create 6 start-ups. By joining geographically scattered expertise and creating a common culture of excellence, IT managed to create a critical mass, enabling to level with the most influential players in telecommunications, to compete for external funding and get international visibility and recognition.
